It is very difficult, I have had the most luck by looking at their heads. The male's forehead is more sharply angled down before their mouth. The female's is a gentle slope from the front of the dorsal to the mouth.

Waiting for them to lay eggs and fertilize is not foolproof, sometimes two females will lay eggs and tend them just like a male and female. The problem, they are not fertilized and will fungus right away.

The best way to get a pair is to buy a group of 6-10 and raise them together. They will pair up naturally and you will probably get a couple pairs out of the group.

If you mean Angelfish, then there is not a whole lot to be able to tell them apart. The Males will develop a bump on hte top of their heads, but occasionally the females will as well so this is not a foolproof way. Also you can look at their bellies, in front of there anal fins, the females are supposed to have more of a U shape while the males tend ot have a V shape.

THe only foolproof way to tell is to catch them in the act of laying eggs or fertilizing them
