The generally accepted answer is that the jester is Bob Dylan. The jester is mentioned as having been "on the sidelines in a cast" later in "American Pie" which is a reference to his severe motorcycle accident.

I don't think so. That song is talking about the "day the music died" which was in 1959. Elvis died in 1977.
