I love you Aaron BUT... I don't love this question. There are cocky and phony people everywhere. All those labels don't matter at the end of the day. Honestly, the south is seen as many DIFFERENT unfavorable things... as well as many favorable. But that's true of most places, and most people for that matter.
As for my own perceptions, I would agree with some others that southerners are (often, not always) slower. I don't necessarily mean that they're mentally or intellectually slower (at least not inherently). I just mean that they are PHYSICALLY slower. They can take sooo looong doing things. And it can be extremely irritating to people who are in a hurry, waiting in lines, that kinda thing.
They also speak a lot more slowly than people in other parts of the country. I vary a lot between very fast and very slow, depending on my mood and how much I'm stopping to think. (Maybe also cause I'm from the middle of the country, and we tend to get a bit of everything.) But most southerners I've known speak very slowly... all the time...

I'm originally from Massachusetts and have been living in South Carolina for the past 14 years. Up north people talk way too fast and down here people talk as slow as molasses going uphill. The people (that I've encountered) down here seem more relaxed and laid-back than the people up north. For the idiots who called the southerners inbred, racist, etc. you couldn't be more wrong. There are such things as stereotypes and not everyone fits into those categories.

I would say we are simple people. Not simple, as in dumb. We are just laid back. Obviously, there are all kinds of people everywhere.
To Dalm - how dare you call me a racist! That couldn't be farther from the truth. Even during the civil rights eras of the 50's and 60's there were a lot of intelligent white people. We have never all been ignorant bigots.

I would correct U and say the north is nice, the west is phony is right on, the east is cocky, and the south is sweet.

"southern"... born & raised in dallas!
now i'm in cali, and the people here i would call "hungry". not "phony", but unnappreciative of the beautiful scenery and the weather. i have no idea how they manage to keep themselves so unhappy but they seem like they're waiting for the next big thing. northerners i wouldn't call cocky but "brisk". they don't have time to be polite, but i don't think it's because they think they're better than anybody. so i can't make southerners "contented" or "slow"... but they probably seem so to northerners and westerners.
just say "southern" and everyone knows you're describing someone who takes their time and loves life :)
and no offense to any geography intended ;)

I'm a northern import to Atlanta.
Nice place, Atlanta; nice people, too; but, they are SOoooooo slow! Luckily, this is a good thing when it comes to making barbecued ribs.

The South is a region filled with individualistic characters. There is never a dull moment in my area. I love Southerners because they are all odd and don't care who knows it.
