Well I was dumb for a while. I thought people were saying Happy Holidays because of the whole week in between Christmas and New Years Day. Then when I realized the reason why, I realized I am not the only dumb one.

I think we should say Merry Christmas and if someone doesn't like they can correct me or whomever and we can say the right phrase. So if we see them again we can say the correct one the nexttime.

A big :P on the whole situation.

I'm just going to copy/paste my answer to basically the same question. I just spent a good amount of time answering this question so here:

I honestly don't see the big deal. There are a myraid of Holidays celebrated, not sure why Happy Holidays is so offensive to some who celebrate Christmas. Honestly, saying Merry Christmas to people who don't celebrate Christmas is kinda obtuse. Do you send 'Christmas' cards to your Jewish friends?

I also don't see people trying to "abolish" it anywhere. If a store chooses to say Happy Holidays, then they have the same rights to say that as you do to say Merry Christmas. Seriously, there are much bigger fish to fry...why put up a stink about what others say when they are WISHING OTHERS GOOD CHEER? Especially when it's just to include others and be kind to everyone....not just those who celebrate christmas.

You do know that Christmas is/was a Pagan holiday to begin with? This doesn't insult Christians at all. Learn about Christmas through the ages...Evergreen trees, yule logs, mistletoe...all symbols used in the Winter Solstice celebrations.
In 350, Pope Julius I declared that Christ’s birth would be celebrated on December 25.

If you don't want to say Happy Holidays to people, fine. But don't expect everyone to HAVE to say Merry Christmas. It's a two way street. The same freedom you get, others get to have.

For all you who are actually angry about this:
Why don't you go thank God for your health and the health of your loved ones. Thank Him for your freedom to voice your displeasure at STUPID crap like this. Thank Him for the roof over your head and food on your tables.

No, the Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas thing doesn't anger me, seeing people take what they have for granted does though. If this 'Holiday Greeting' thing gets you THAT upset, then you must have a very easy life. Peace to all, hope you can learn that this isn't the type of thing to make you "fume"

My town went a step beyond saying "Happy Holidays". They renamed the Christmas holiday "Sparkle Season". They didn't even want to mention the word "holiday" lest they remind someone of Christmas and offend them. Of course everyone thought it was ridiculous and I think we're back to calling it "The Holiday Season" again. I see nothing wrong with saying Merry Christmas. How is that offensive to anyone? If someone wished me Happy Channuka I would not be offended. I just would smile and thank them.

I don't have a problem with "Happy Holidays" as I do have a lot of Jewish friends and their holiday coincides with Christmas. What I find funny are those saying "Merry X-mas" thinking they are "taking Christ out of Christmas"

Xmas has been used for hundreds of years in religious writing, where the X represents a Greek chi, the first letter of Χριστος, “Christ.” In this use it is parallel to other forms like Xtian, “Christian.” But people unaware of the Greek origin of this X often mistakenly interpret Xmas as an informal shortening pronounced (ĕks'məs). Many therefore frown upon the term Xmas because it seems to them a commercial convenience that omits Christ from Christmas.

"Happy Holidays" is more tolerant and respectful. People used to say it all of the time because there are a bunch of holidays all bunched together in December/January, and you most likely won't see the person you're talking to on that holiday.

I don't wish people a Happy Whatever-Holiday-Only-I-Celebrate, so I just wish a Happy Holiday season, especially if I don't know what days are special to them. If I know the person is Christian, I will wish her/him a Merry Christmas. If the person is Pagan, a Happy Yule, and so on and so forth.

Respect other people's beliefs and try not to insult anyone.

It is very stupid........ I do not think that people have the right to tell us what we can say or not say, just because u have so many people that do not believe in god anymore , merry christmas is not to be said. What is up with this country, we are suppose to be a free country with freedom of speech but merry christmas is not one of the speeches we can say along with god bless, this is so not right.

I agree. People should be able to say what they want (Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, etc) as long as it's not offensive. But unfortunately the powers that be are extremely over-sensitive so they demand that everyone else share the same level of sensitivity, which is illegal becasue our freedom of speech has been taken away. Pretty soon, we'll be living in a dictatorship if we aren't already.

I know, I think it is stupid too because the purpose of Christmas is because it is a remembrance of Jesus' birthday. So, I have taught my kids NOT to say Happy Holidays, they tell people Merry Christmas!

When you greet someone during the holidays you don't know if they celebrate Christmas or not. So it is the polite thing to say Happy Holidays. Now if you know the person celebrates Christmas for sure than you can say Merry Christmas.

I thinks it's stupid that people want to change everything just because they don't like it and it's actually allowed. I work for WalMart and they did not make us stop saying Merry Christmas, but suggested we say Happy Holidays not to offend anyone.
