I know that to type certain foreign symbols, such as á, and pretty much any symbol there is, you can hold "alt" and enter in a numerical key.

For example é = alt+0233

Can anyone tell me how to type the square root?

There doesn't seem to be an ALT code for that one, but you can just copy and paste it from somewhere else. Here's one for you:

There is a whole web site on how, what, which, to use on the keyboard for symbols and other stuff. Check it out it could help you.
There are a couple of other sites but can't remember at the moment.
