OK, here's my version. In general terms when we write, we press down with a pen or pencil onto a sheet of paper or whatever. The writing is below the hand, therefore we are 'writing down'. When typing on a typewriter or pc, the typing appears on a ledger, or monitor screen which are generally above the hands. Therefore we are 'typing-up'. Remember also we go up north or down south. This is because of the convention we have of depicting the north at the top of a page in our Atlas books. I believe it's all to do with our fixed perception of what is up or down and the way our eyes interpret the information.

Because in an old fashioned type writer the paper goes up as you type on it. When you write your paper is down.

Dunno, but I also find that it is hard to drink up. Tried that once standing on my head. Blew bubbles out my nose, NEVER again!
