Your computer uses RAM as memory storage that is lost when you turn the machine off, this holds all running software including your operating system. When you are using too much RAM the machine will use part of your hard drive as RAM as it is not actual RAM it is called virtual memory.
Imagine you are working at a desk and you run out of desk space and have to put some stuff back into the drawers of the desk.
The problem with this solution is that Hard drives are far slower than RAM. This slows your machine down - i.e. if you have to keep opening and closing drawers to get and store pages whatever you are working on will take ages.
Now when you run low in virtual memory you are running out of the space on the hard drive that has been put aside by your system to be used as virtual memory.
Close unneccessary programs - that should clear out a few drawers.
In this anology you can think of the Hard Drive as a filing cabinet so when you save a file you are storing it in a filing cabinet. The structure of folders (directories) and files is how your filing cabinet is arranged.

these directions will tell you how to increase your vitrtual memory
i dont recommend this though you you could make the OS unstable
if you have a 1gb of RAM you really shouldnt have this problem unless you are a supermulti tasker
in which case you need more RAM
check your start up folder in start-all programs and make sure everything in there is something that you actually need running when windows starts if you have alof things in there they could be hogging all your memory
if there are things in there you dont need just delete them you are not actually deleting the program just preventing it from loading with windows.
to increase the virtual memory do the folowing
In the Control-Panel, select the System icon (or right-click "My Computer" on the desktop and select Properties)
Select the tab: "Advanced" and then in the section "Performance" the button "Settings".
In the Window "Performance Options", use the tab : "Advanced"
In the section "Virtual Memory", the system shows the total size
of the Paging file, which you can increase with the "Change" button.
good luck

Virtual Memory is the term used to describe what is essentually a part of your hard drive that your computer uses as RAM.
The computer takes a part of your hard drive and uses it in exactly the same way as it does with the RAM, so essentially it makes your pc seem like it has more RAM.
considering you have 1GB of RAM already, it is very strange that you should run low on virtual Memory, im inclined to think you have a virus or spyware on your pc and it is hogging your resources.
download spybot search and destroy and also cCleaner, use them and see if it helps

Try closing some of your programs.
To increase your virtual memory go to "Control Panel" click on "System"
under the tab "Advanced" click on the "settings" for "performance"
here you should be seeing a tab "advance" under that you should be able to see your virtual memory settings. you can change the allocated size here.

you should not need to increase your virtual memory if you have 1GB if your pc is giving buble saying that the virtual memory is low then it must be running extremly slow, if it is do this:
go to start
click on RUN
type MSCONFIG and click OK
then when the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY comes up
click on the STARTUP tab
UNCHECK everything except for antivirus items (usually it says under the command colum what file is the item from if you have norton make sure all the one's from symantec and norton stay checked)
then click OK and restart your computer.
and now it should be running faster :)
