I'd agree with John J, if you're using Internet Explorer to browse the internet (or you've donwloaded some nonsense software) you can often get infected with spyware (otherwise known as adware) which will try and scam you into paying money for some software you don't need. Often these scam attempts take the form of windows that pop-up on your machine giving some dire warning about registry errors and telling you that only by buying their software can you fix the problem. It's all bullshit basically, if there was a registry problem Windows would *never* inform you this way, what you actually want to do here is clean out the spyware infection. John's recommendations of AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy are sound, and I'd also advise trying Microsoft's own antispyware application. All of these are free and you should run them all as sometimes one of them will clear out an infection that the others miss:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
They basically all work in the same way as a virus scanner, you need to keep them up to date and to regular scans to stay clean.
Also: Internet Explorer is one of the biggest vectors for this kind of crap. It's unsecure and will allow people to foist all sorts of **** onto your machine without asking you first just from you surfing the internet. Switch to something safer like Firefox and your spyware issue will almost completely disappear.

Registry problem not always points to virus/spyware: usually, they even do not cause registry problems. You had not mentioned here, what is that problem. Registry is a kind of database file and as any other file it can be corrupted.
To learn how to fix the problem, you first have to explain what is the problem. Next time please send also error message text.

That sounds like some spyware I recently cleaned off of my sister-in-law's computer. Just download Ad-aware and Spy bot (free from http://www.download.com/ ) and run both of them until they stop finding programs.
