Because the people of the north did not develop sendentary and agricultural societies before their southern or mesoamerican counterparts. North American Indigenous peoples were scattered, herding and practicing slash and burn techniques while those (Incas, Mayans, Aztecs) in the south had already settled down into agricultural civilizations.
Once a society becomes agricultural, food surpluses and subsequent population boom results. Because one farmer can now feed 25 people with the crops he grows, people can focus on specilialized jobs in the arts or mathmatics; i.e. higher knowledge. Higher knowledge leads to further developments in agricultural practices, increasing the farmer:population ratio even more. Then, once a society is not burdened by the search for a consistent food source (they are settled down in agriculture), they can focus on conquering, inventing, and becoming a great civilization.
Short answer: Agriculture.

there was no reason for them to.......they owned all of the americas; the gold, the land, the water ways; that WAS their empire. And everything they had was quite literally stolen from them by the invaders by pure mass of force. And since the native americans couldn't ALL be killed off while they were trying to protect what was theirs, they got rounded up and put on little plots of land that the invaders didn't want "at the time". The native americans lost their pride; their land; their food; and even their religion through unadulterated greed...plain and simple.

That is an interesting question. The US natives do seem to be a less glamourous culture and more in tune with nature and the earth. Maybe because they were nomadic (no expert here, just going off the bs i learned in school) or perhaps their religion didn't call for such lavishness.
I now want to know.
