I don't mean the base of the laptop itself, I mean right underneath the screen.

Also, when I say "underneath the screen" I mean the 1 inch area right below the actual LCD Display.

Well, yes, its normal, but thats why Laptops werent created to use for a long period of time. Thats why there is a new chip called Centrino that prevents this situation. IT keeps it cool, and you can use it for as long as you like.

You should try using it for short periods of time, and it depends where are you putting it on, OR just use an extra vent!, to keep it cool.

If its too much, get someone to check on it, the main vent could not be working, and it could seriousluy damage your laptop, starting wih the hard drive.

you mean underneath the laptop itself or under the actual screen of the laptop only ?

Also if it is just the underneath of the laptop that is getting hot then how old is the laptop and also what are the specs of the laptop and what sort of temperatures are we talking about here aproximatly ( preferably in degrees celsius )

that depends on the surface you are putting it on
some laptops run pretty hot and they need some kind of air flow underneath them. they actually make small tables for this purpose some with fans on them and some just to give the laptop breathing room under them. hope this helps.

Laptops do get warm. There is so much stuffed into a small space without much chance for a breeze to blow through that heat builds up.

If it is too hot that it is unbearable, have someone check it. The fan might not be running properly.
