My turtles throw up the food too but they eat it back up right away.

Reasons:
1. They were SO hungry and so they ate too fast and it did't hit the right spot.
2. You scared them and so he puked out.

For me I think # 1 is my reason.

1. Stressing the poor thing- don't feed it when you plan to clean the tank. Handling turtles stresses them.

2. Feed it the right foods. Try high-quality (expensive) pellets and live bloodworms.

3. Make sure that the basic cares are ok- tank size, temps, lighting, etc. The site below can help.

4. How are you cleaning the tank? Consider a less stressful technique like good filters.

You say he's a painted turtle...so is he in a cage, or a tank? Painted turtles are water turtles. They NEED to be in water, with an area where they can get out and bask. Are you feeding him in water? They can not swallow their food unless you feed them in water. I feed mine in the kitchen sink because it helps keep their tank cleaner. What are you feeding him? If you're feeding him commercial turtle sticks, be sure to buy different kinds because they're all different, and they do need variety. Also, try the website below. It's a site for red eared sliders BUT they also have a lot of answers for painted turtles, and they have a forum for you to ask questions in. They've been quite helpful to me on occasion.

It could be that either he doesn't like what you are using to clean his cage or maybe the whole process of cleaning makes him nervous and he can't keep his food down. Try feeding him at a different part of the routine. Maybe that will help.

u may have used poisonos chemicals like bleach or amonia. I would suggest cleaning his cage again with just hot water.
