I have a '86 Volvo GLE that when it did run it would back-fire with a loud bang. Now, it will start and idle, but will not drive. It simply dies when I put it in gear.

Does anybody have any feedback/possible answer to whats wrong with my car?

It's very important because it's my only car and I have 5 kids to get back and forth all over town.

Thank you in advance for any help.

I'm thinking you need to take it to a mechanic to have it assessed...there are several possibilities here. The backfire could mean you have a timing situation...bad or slipped timing chain/belt, distributor issues, etc., especialy if it idles really rough.
It could also be a fuel delivery system problem...fuel pump, plugged fuel filter, etc....but it would just be guesswork without seeing the vehicle. Have it towed to a good mechanic.

Hope this helped a little.

have a mechanic check it. Timing could be off, low fuel pressure, or even a bad MAF sensor ( Mass Air Flow )
