To quote the site "This program enables you to acquire certification for CompTIA A+ and Security+, and Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP)". That's just 3 certificates. The program is $21k and 1 year. I got an email from an employer stating it would not qualify me for a job I was interested in with him and it would only get me about $12-15 an hour. That's pretty discouraging. Anyone think different? Otherwise I'll probably become an electrician.

If you're going to try to get a computer-related job with certifications and no experience, go for the MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) instead of the MCP because MCSE's need to take between 7-9 exams to be fully certified and it's considered the "premier" certification. Also you should stick to one discipline; the three certs you mention are a little of everything and you may do better sticking to just hardware, just networking or just security.

That said... $12-15/hour is a little on the low side but not all that low. If you can get $20/hour with certs and no experience you are doing well. Also this program seems to be too expensive for what you get. Look for a lower-priced school that either offers job placement assistance or an internship program.

All in all... it's hard to get that first job. Once you have some experience AND your certs, your salary will go up and most IT folks make more than most electricians (except for the best of the master electricians) so in the long run you will probably earn more in IT. But in the near future, a salary of $15-20/hour is realistic till you have some experience.

the computer field is wide open, once you obtain experience. As an electrician, you get certification to handle higher voltage. Shocking!

Yes, you will start at about $15. Unless you have NETWORKING EXPERIENCE. Your MCSE/MCP will include that.

That sounds about right, my fiance graduated from a 2 year networking program, has experience in building, setup, and maintenance of pc, mac, laptops, servers, etc. We have our own server set up at home! He knows about everything there is to know about the damn things, and he still is having trouble finding a place that wants to pay him $14/hour! Go into something else, I would recommend, the computer field is just too flooded.
