A female turtle will have a curved underside. A Males is flat.

This does not work on small turtles, but:

Males have long, slender tails; incurved bellies, and long front claws

Females have short stubby tails, flat or outcurved belly, and front claws about as long as the rear.

You can't tell until they become adult (4-5inches). For male you will see super long claws (kinda scary). Females' claws are normal length.
