If you are taking notes in class, no. You can be as messy as you want. Just know that eventually you will have to read your handwriting for test-taking purposes.

If you are writing a report or taking a test, the answer is yes. These are conditions were it is vital that you write professionally. You have to organize your ideas and express them clearly. (At least, they should be clear enough for your professor to know what the heck you are talking about!)
