First, check the rubber part of the wipers for hardness or stiffness...that's a sign of age, and means they need replacing. They should be relatively soft, pliable, and free of cracks. If they look OK then wipe them with a little vinegar to clean any gunk that might be on them. Dry them off and see if that helps (it should). Otherwise, I'd consider replacing the wiper refills.

The problem with modern wipers is that a lot of them are made of composite polymers/plastics/silicones rather than good old rubber, which used to last a really long time if properly cared for.

Hope this helped.

They should not squeak if there is water on wind shield. Different brands also squeak more than others. Sometimes the cheaper ones are better than the more expensive ones. In the old days it seems like they lasted the life of a car anymore I have to replace a couple of times a year or more.

If the squeek is from the blades give them a wipe with a cloth soaked in vinegar

Presume you mean squeaking...............this is normally attributed to the arms being out of true. To remedy, twist arms with a pair of pliers to make them level with the windscreen, in other words the flat of the arm MUST be parallel to windscreen surface. Hope this helps...

If it's the blades, they and the glass are probably greasy; clean well with hot water and washing up liquid.

Change them, they're probably worn. Or check they haven't come away at the edges, it might be the metal grinding on your window, ouch!
