You may have a problem with your water quality. Goldfish are pretty "dirty" fish and need partial water changes every 2-3 days if you don't have a filtration system. Make sure your fish isn't swimming in its own filth. If he is just lying on the top and not swimming to the top and gasping for air then it sounds like your fish has a problem with its swim bladder. I've heard of several remedies to try. This one sounds strange but feed it peas. Something about peas cleans out their systems (kinda like a bran muffin does for people). You may try withholding food for 4 days or so and see if the "clog" clears itself. Hopefully one of these will work. If they do try pre-soaking his food before you put it in the tank. That way it will already have expanded BEFORE it gets into your fish and blocks him up again. Good luck!

YOU HAVE A NITRATE (No3) PROBLEM, No3 will starve the water of oxygen..... Get half the water out of the tank and replace it ASAP, and remember to de chlorinate with water ager. The affects of nitrate on a fish will be to cause it to be come lethargic and stay near the top until it gets a chance to revive itself. The oxygen levels are higher closer to the top of the tank. You should see some improvement a couple of days after the change. Also when you pour in the new water it will 'pulse' oxygen through the tank to help. When water is pushed through itself as like when you pour water in it forces O2 into the tank. Hope this helps.

If this is something that your Goldfish has just started to do .. and has not done in the past .. then , Yes, I would say your goldfish is probably not healthy and may be on its way out of this world.

not neccesarily, my neighbour has got one doing the same thing, she calls it swim bladder or whatever, she takes him out and puts him in a clean bowl of cold water, she puts her hand in the bowl to scoop him up and rubs his tummy, after a rub and a little rest in the bowl she returns him o the tank, he has been like it for over a year and still alive. dont know if this info any good, but thought i would tell the story.

If your goldfish gulps for air when it does that then you do not have enough oxygen in the water, but if it doesn't then it probably is old or the water quality isn't good.

He might have what they call Ich pronounced "ick". There is a special liquid that you can buy at the petstore called Rid Ich which you can put into the water and it will help kill the disease. I hope this helps!
