The sideseam on a pattern is the part that is not folded. If the pattern starts under the arm, that is where the sideseam begins, if it is a two piece pattern for example, a top bodice, it will have a top sideseam, and the lower skirt pattern will also have a sideseam, measured from the waist. Unless you have a pattern that has no sideseam at all. But to answer your question, if it is a dress with only a front and back, and no separate waist, the sideseam is measured from under the arm to the bottom of the dress. Have fun sewing, I'm glad it's not a lost art. God Bless.

Well I could be wrong....but, think of it this way. How big is your waist. If you have lets say a 28" waist size...if side seam means length then that is going to a mighty short dress. I take the 28" side seam as that being the width of the dress. Like, if you were bigger in the hips that you couldn't or wouldn't want to wear this dress. But hey I am just guessing. It that is wrong, you gotta give me credit cause it sounds good!

Whenever you see a seam measurement, it is measured from where the seam starts.
Sideseam - from the underarm to the bottom hem of the dress.
Inseam - from the groin to the bottom of the hem of the pants/shorts.
Outseam - waist to ankle

Some other measurements:
Bust - measured around the widest part of the chest
Waist - measured around the smallest part of your
Hip - measured around the widest part of your hips
Back- measured from the bone at the base of your neck to the waist
Shoulder - measured from the neck to the shoulder bone
Arm - measured from the shoulder bone around the outside of the elbow to the wrist
Sleeve length - measured from the bone at the base of your neck over the shoulder and down the outside of the elbow to the wrist (for long sleeves)
Torso - measured from the highest point of the shoulder to the groin. Go around the groin back to the starting point for swimsuits.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, but that should cover most any clothing you might need to order.

It is usually measured from under the armpits..down (that is for a dress). If it's pants and they say 28" inseam, it is measured from the inside where the crotch starts all the way down. In other words, where you see the seam, that is where you measure.

i would find one that has a corset type of waist and a halter neck. the corset will make your waist look smaller and the halter makes your shoulder look small. try one of these on and see how it works!!
