ARE YOU AS FURIOUS ABOUT THIS AS I AM?

Shouldn't we be taking care of the home (earth) we have NOW, and not worrying about where we can move to when we've depleted all our resources here? That money can be put to much better use.
The apathy shocks me, for real.

Orthodox Ted: The cost? Where do you think this money is coming from, anyway?

I quite agree! Why do we need to send people to the moon AGAIN?

And couldn't the money be better used watering the deserts we have here on Earth? Actually, no!

NASA are not allowed to spend their budget on starving children, victims of man-made or natural disasters and so on - or not directly. Money and economics are a very odd phenomenon. Billions are spent and one thinks about the greens in one's pocket as being somehow equivalent to that. It's not actually true! Money (in terms of contracts and profits) is a fluid which must circulate, like the blood in our bodies, to keep the economy going. The tiny capilliaries which feed the skin of the 'economy' are you and me - individuals who get paid for doing a day's work. What we call our own hard-earned cash is not really that at all! When you think about it, we convert it into the necessaries of life and all of the money actually finds its way back into the economy, one way or another, to keep the machine going.

Returning astronauts to the moon (I like the ridiculous way that is worded - did they come from the moon, already?) may seem like a waste of money but on the way those multibillions will do many, many other things. One hopes, for example, that the enormous problems involved with supporting life (the astronauts) in a hostile environment (space and on the moon) will return some benefits in problems solved which will find their way down the 'scientific advances' tree and will actually help a farmer to survive in, say, Ethiopia. Who knows!

I, for one, regard 'economy' as a very strange animal that needs understanding and taming. Likewise, the Space program (which is also driven by the perception of Defense) has spin-offs which do benefit mankind - and some of those benefits simply would not have had a chance to be developed if it were not for the money put into the Space program/Defence.

I believe this money could be spent for a better cause. It is good to build spaceships to return to the moon... Good for the government's ego! And what about the people who are practically starving not only in the underdevelopped countries, the countries devastated by wars, but also the poor families in the United States of America.
Prioroities are being ignored here!

A lot of scientific advances have come from experiments in space and zero gravity. This is not just a glorified plane flight to the moon with the astronauts drinking martinis in first class. There are legitimate reasons for space flights that have nothing to do with landing on the moon.

And if they do land on the moon, the astronauts can sing "We're whalers on the moon. We carry our harpoons, but there ain't no whales so we tell tall tales and sing this whaling tune."

The people we need to discover and design the next generation fuel source cold fusion need to come from somewhere. Personally would like to see that money put into space station.

Absolutelty - but think about this for a second.

If the US sent man to the moon once upon a time, why can't we send man back to the moon, or mars for that matter.
