Use the rescue disk (CD that came with your PC) and choose the "Repair Windows" option.

Try running different spyware programs.if you have an updated virus scan, run that. If you dont have one, go to http://www.ewido.net/en/ and run the trial version of this anti-spyware program. Adware also has a free trial version and I ended up buying the upgraded version and works great. The URL for that is http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaw...
These two programs should not only detect and clean any spyware, but also quarantine any Trojans on your computer. Hopefully you'll find something and get it cleaned and all will work again. I would also recommend to try to start your computer up in Safe Mode. With that, you might be able to do a system restore to recover any potential data loss, so that you are able to properly boot up. Your last resort will be to reformat your hard drive, which really sucks.

Boot from your Windows XP installation CD and reinstall. Treat the install like you are doing an upgrade so you don't have to reinstall your other programs. After reinstalling, go to the Microsoft update site and reinstall all of the updates.

Go into safe mode while the system is booting by pressing the F8 key and after getting in, do a system restore. (If you are using Windows XP or ME)

Erase the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch. I would not recommend just repairing Windows because that might not erase the trojans and so on that caused your problem.

i had my pc do this a few times, rebooted like 30 times and the same thing, wouldn't even start up really. i ended up having to restore the OS cus I was out of options basically. Don't worry, you can recover any data that was on the OS at the time (GetDataBack, etc.) if you end up having to do this but make it a very last option. I have a rescue disk on a floppy disk, dunno if it would work on your PC/OS though. I'd send it to you though if you wanted to try it.

during boot up press "f2" ( i think ) to enter the boot menu, ask to boot upin windows safe mood, from there delete was ever is bad.
Failing that try booting up in DOS, but you will need the commands to fix it.

the virus could still be there.. you can either do a system restore or reformat the computer to get rid of everything.. the virus migt still be hiding somewhere in your files and cannot be dtected by your antivirus software
