I have tried gathering up all his droppings & putting them in one corner of the yard & hosing off the rest of the lawn, but that didn't change anything at all. He continues to leave piles all over the back lawn. He is a fairly large dog (pointer) & is very smart, but also very stubborn. I also tried catching him "in the act" & taking him to where I want him to go, but then he won't go at all until I leave.

IMO, if he doesn't go inside and faithfully does his business outside, then COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS!

Your dog is not a human being. If he's going outside, he's doing GREAT and you should priase him. I think it is unrealistic to expect him to go in a certain spot outdoors.

Perhaps you should lighten up, and just enjoy your dog.

First teach your dog to read, then have a sign 4foot by 4 foot made designating the exact spot you want it too use, then fence that corner in and put the dog in that corner, believe it or not it will go in that corner if you do not open the gate.

If his in the house and has to go to the bathroom put a leash on him, lead him to the spot you want him to pie or poop. Keep on telling him to go potty. If he does on that spot, give him a treat and tell him that he is a good dog. If he pies at another spot tell him no and show him a treat but don't give it to him. Lead him to the spot and let him smell the treat there and that it were you will give it to him. After a while he will catch on.

Dogs consider your whole lawn their territory. Males in particular like to "mark" it in various spots. I think you might confuse them by trying to teach them to go in certain places outside. They probably think "Gee, I know I'm not supposed to go in the house and I thought it was okay to go outside but maybe it isn't."

If your dog is male, forget it. Female dogs tend to just use one part of the yard, but mine goes everywhere.
