I will only refer to those jobs within the Chicagoland area and those that require at least a bachelor degree. Some will involve business related functions, which I realize may not be very liberating to most people, but there is a reason business related positions pay more than social workers, etc.

Here are some choices

1. Banking - If you work within the commercial banking sector, many jobs can provide a great work/life balance. One example is a credit analyst position. Average hours can be as low as 36 hours a week, although the average is likely between 40-45 hours a week, and pay usually starts in the upper $40's to lower $50's. After 5 years, you can reach about $75K at some larger institutions, with approximately a 15% annual bonus. One of the best plusses? Vacation and paid holidays has to be the best next to teachers. Downers? Pressure, Pressure and more pressure to produce. With over 8,000 banks in this country vying for the same customers, you need to be good at what you do because loans, etc. are becoming increasingly commoditized. Another downer: You work for most likely the most bureaucratic organizations of all.

2. Insurance - Pretty much like banking, but not as safe. One big payout could result in many layoffs.

3. Actuary - Good hours, good pay. Not uncommon to see ranges in the 90's after 5 years and 40 hour weeks. Downer: Tough as heck exam, and routine work after a while.

4. Professor - Make your own hours, main job is research, and you are insulated from the "real world". In some schools, you can show up with a beard, sandals, and a beer. Downer: PhD is required; competition is ultra stiff at top universities; obtaining tenure is very political; did I mention loads of student debt?

5. Teacher - Someone mentioned this, but you need to factor in prep time for classes before jumping to conclusions.

6. Plumber - Can make more than those with Master's Degrees at times. Knew a plumber who drove a Ferrari and lived in a mansion. Something tells me this isn’t unusual. Very inelastic demand for this service. Plus, I guess it pays to work with crap on a daily basis. This is the only one that does not require a degree, but does require specialized training - usually through a union.

There are many more, but I hope some of these gave you ideas.

Around here, in the Chicago metro area, that would be teaching. The Chicago public school system starts first year teachers at $46,000/year, you're out of school by 2:30, you get every holiday known to man off of work, 2 weeks at Christmas, another week in the spring, along with personal days. Best yet, you get the summer off, too! How easy is that?

If you like to breathe smoke, firefighters usually work 24 hours in a row, then 48 hours off. Kind of a weird schedule, but it would give you quite a bit of free time.

Heiress, but only if you were born with a silver spoon. Quit daydreaming, get off your lazy butt, and go to work like the rest of us.
