What do you think is the best Final Fantasy and why?

the problem i have with this question is that pretty much the only people who will answer it haven't played any of the good FFs.
Final Fantasy IV had a solid storyline, for one thing. each person was personally affected by the enemy, and had a reason for joining your team.
your characters were set into solid classes, from which they could not change. yea, guess what, not everyone can cast cure, you'll have to find another way around that!
it involved thought. sometimes you need to actually think about where you're going, or why. the dark elf's cave? genius not letting you wear metal! how to get there? use actual clues to get there. you just found out about black chocobos... and there is a forest nearby... etc.

8 had a great story, a shame the graphics are so lame as it would be nice to play it again. Glad to see nobody has put X-2, that blows, but was still better than X.

id have to say 9 because its was getting into better graphics but staying with a good story line

7 definately. the story was fantastic (and is still in progress, see Dirge of Cerebures, Crisis Core, Advent Children, etc.) the characters were well-developed and it was just...WOW..

FF7, i loved it the story sucked me right in and kept me glued for ages. 4 discs 2. and i still have it.
