I have somewhat irregular and difficult periods and this month (more so than any other) I am having severe anxiety and depression. I did not respond well to birth control... Does anyone know if it is ok to take an antidepressant TEMPORARILY for PMS symptoms? Will I become dependent on them and unable to bounce back after the PMS has stopped?

It takes 3 months for them to regulate your system but they do help honestly you just can't take them temporarily you should stay on them for at least a year.

I don't think you can take them and then stop immediately. You would have to talk to your doctor about that. I know that when you take it for a while, you have to take it in decreasing doses til your completely off. You will not become dependent on them. It is not a narcotic or anything like that. I never had any luck with birth control either. I started the Nuvaring and I really like it. It releases a steady, small dose of hormones so your not up and down. Its a ring you stick in and don't take out til three weeks and then you wait one week and have a period and then start over. I was having hormone problems and irregular periods and that's why I started it. I have been taking it for two months now with no problems. Well, at first I did have some abdominal pain, but not too bad. It soon went away. Just try it for two months and if it doesn't work for you, then stop it.

I was also offered antidepressants as a solution to my pms problems. The problem is that those medications come with their own set of side effects. I alway look for an alternative to those medications and refused to take antidepressants. Always research whatever meds you take and make a more educated decision instead of these doctors just handing out meds like candy.

There IS a PMS specific antidepressant. It is called Sarafem. Talk to your doctor about it - I was going to try it, but I have no insurance. As soon as I get some, I will be getting it. PMS makes me like Jekyll & Hyde - my friends know by things I say & do when I am PMSing. That's bad!

antidepressants are not a temporary medication. you'd need to take them continually for them to have any effect. if you want to take something just while you're having your period, look into nerve pills.
