I like blithering nincompoop or fool but there are many others. That is, if like me, you use the word only as an adjective. Our American cousins also use it as a verb, blither, noun, blither and adverb, blitheringly but let's not follow their corrupted form of English. I also thought it came from "blather" not "blether" as xenobyte72 says?

"Blithering fool" is another. Or to be really Scottish, "Blithering numpty". I've always understood it to mean blethering in a silly, unintelligent manner. A bit like some answers we get on Yahoo.....?

BLITHERING is a verb form of blither, which is a form of another verb BLATHER. With the ending......ING it is a present participle and can be used as an adjective>>>>"blithering idiot." Thus the word can be used as an adjective with another noun as long as you want to signify someone who talks nonsensically.

My blithering 2 yr old daughter had a lengthly conversation with her teddy bear last night.
