When you write x-4/9 people assume 4/9 is the fraction four ninths. You should write the problem (x-4)/9=-1. Then everyone will know you are suppose to divide x-4 by nine, rather than just dividing 4 by 9.
(x-4)/9=-1
Multiply both sides by 9.
x-4=-9
Add 4 to both sides.
x=-5

Fist you times the nine over to the other side.
x-4= -1(9) or x-4= -9
Then add the for over to the other side, you need to add in order to cancel out the minus four.
X= -9+5 or x= -5
hope that helps

Without parentheses,
x - 4 / 9 = -1 [Add 4 / 9 to both sides]
x = -1 + 4 / 9 = -9 / 9 + 4 / 9 = -5 / 9
By tossing in parentheses to group (x - 4) {if that's what you're trying to do}
(x - 4) / 9 = -1 [Multiply by 9]
x - 4 = -9 [Add 4]
x = -9 + 4 = -5

The answer to this problem as written is -5/9. If the answer is supposed to be 5, you wrote it incorrectly.

well (x-4)/9=(-1)
(x-4)=(-1)(9)
x-4=(-9)
x=(-5)
that version was assuming that the divided quantitiy is (x-4), otherwise the answer is 5/9ths

Cross multiply and you get:-
x - 4 = -9 Add 4 to both sides, we get:-
x = - 5
So the answer is minus 5.
