Twelve half notes and six whole tones

C to D (1), D to E (2), E to F# (3), F# to G# (4), G# to A# (5), A#
or Bb to C (6).

It seems like there should be 8 though because of the prefix Oct=8, or A,B,C,D,E,F,G,A... but then we do call the 10th month OCTober.... and THEN we can look at sharps and flats... Oh well. Per wikipedia, "In the chromatic scale, this is 13 notes counting both ends, although traditionally, one speaks of 12 notes of the chromatic scale, not counting both ends."

In "Western" music, 12 if you count the first and last note of the octave and all the sharps and/or flats. In "Eastern" music (specifically India) there would be 24 as they divide their scales up into quarter-tones. Really? An "octave" is the distance BETWEEN two notes, so two!!!

"Octo" means eight, e.g. October was originally the eighth month, but Julius and Augustus Caesar added months named fror them for the 7th and 8th months, so the rest were pushed down two notches. An octillion is the 8th interval in large numbers above one thousand. It is a one followed by 27 zeroes. An interesting fact is that Chinese use five musical notes, not eight. I suppose that is a quintave, not an octave.
