Every car is rated for a certain octane by the manufacture of the car. This rating is the type you should use. Using a higher octane does nothing for you as far as fuel mileage and really does nothing else that would be worth the cost. Gas is gas its the type of additives the put in it to change the octane. As far is cleaner burning and faster. Doesn't happen and if it did you would be paying alot of money for very little improvement. Your emissions would not change because it does not burn any cleaner. Manufactures put the octane rating for the best performance of your engine.
Using lower octane on your car could damage it. Find what the manufacture says for your car and use that.
If you want to put something better in your engine to run better, increase mpg slightly and cut down miles between oil changes you might consider in changing to synthetic oil.

Ok first off I must say that most people use the wrong gas grade. Unless your car requires the premium dont use it. It will not give you better milage then say regular.
Cars like the staulth or advenger ( Dodge) will require the hight test stuff.
As to oil, I have been repairing cars for a long time and have seen oils com and go.
For my money Penzoil is what I use in the car and the service truck.
The key here is the oil filter. A good filter will keep the oil cleaner longer. For my money I never use a Fram. It is a cheep filter and wont keep the oil clean.

No, premium gas will not give you more mileage compared to regular gas. Your pick-up (acceleration) will certainly improve because premium gas burns more faster and efficiently compared to regular gas.
Is it better for the car ? The differenc may hardly matter.
If you are looking for more mileage. Here are a few tips.
Keep your tire inflated to the correct pressure. (If it is slightly more, its better for better mileage but expect bumpier rides)
Regular Oil Change.
Accelerate gradually instead of hitting the gas pedal to the floor the moment you start the engine.
Anticipate stops in advance; and take off your foot from the gas pedal accordingly.
Air-conditioning and Heating reduces mileage also.
Best oil? The more you pay the better the oil.

Only use premium gas in a vehicle that specifically calls for it in the owners manual.
You will get slightly better fuel economy from premium fuel, but the difference in price makes it less economical. On other words, you don't save enough fuel to make up the difference in price. So you are only giving extra money to the oil companys. I think they have enough already.
As for the difference in how your car runs, the electronic engine management (computer) in your car constantly adjusts to the type fuel, atmospheric conditions, and your driving conditions. So the engine will run pretty much the same on 87 octane (regular) as it will on 92 or above octane(premium) fuel.
As to the oil, synthetic oil is better. With any oil, as long as you use a name brand, they are all about the same. Just make sure you follow your car manufacturer's recommendation for viscosity.

On your '03 Elantra, higher octane gas won't help your mileage, but might help performance slightly. You are fine with regular grade gas though. Generally high octane fuel only makes a significant difference on cars with high-perf engines. As far as oil goes, synthetic oil is the best. It performs better and flows better under a greater temperature range, but is more expensive. I personally use Mobil 1 synthetic in my 'Vette, and of course it needs the higher octane fuel...but my Durango uses normal gas and 10w30 Castrol. Hope this info helped.

Premium gas can give you better mileage, experiment with it and you'll figure it out.
Mine runs best on mid grade. When I cost it out the mileage increase actually more than pays for the extra price of gas.
Also synthetic oil is better, I also add some STP oil after each change, this make the engine smoother and quiter, and increases power a very small amount due to the free running of the engine.

Your Elantra will run just fine on regular gas. Using higher octane fuel will make no difference to your engine so don't waste the money.
I recommend Mobil 1. It costs more but you don't change it as often and the less friction in your engine will also increase your gas mileage .

I have personally calculated this and you are getting better mileage with premium gas. I also think its better for your engine because it burns cleaner.
As far as oil goes, some people say synthetic is better, but I allways use regular good quality oil (Castrol, Valvoline, etc, its all the same), just use whatever grade is recomended by the manufacturer, usually 5w30, and make sure you change it every 5000 km(approx 3000 miles)

it wont give you bette rmileage, only use if your car is designed for it , mostly high pref cars or turbo and supercharged cars need it. it has nothing to do with power, just the burn rate, if u use it in a car meant for low octane then you will just waste gas and money and car will run rough, and vice versa if you use cheap gas in a car meant for high octane then it will run badly and detonate and pre-ignite the fuel because it wont be burning it at the right speed and will get to hot. and for oil i always use mobil 1 synthetic. only time you would need high octane in a regular car is when it knocks, using higher octane slows the burn and cools off the heat so it wont kill motor.

No, premium gas does not give your better mileage, nor is it better for your car. You should put in your car what the manufacturer recommends.
Synthetic oils seem to outlast their conterparts, but are much more expensive.
