should be under 30 seconds, depending on the other persons reception or provider etc.
if you have a nokia phone, you can see when the person has received it, you will get a text that says 'delivered'
You have to go to the message settings to get the delivery reports

i send lots and get lots of texts.
usuallly if sending messages to the same network its practically instant, If sent to another network may take a tad bit longer. If either your network or your recievers network is busy it will again take longer to recieve.
way less then a minute. me and my freinds send like at least 2 txts per min.
(i send one then she sends one back the i send one then she sends one back-)
we are also fast.

depends on the mobile providers... like email, it takes longer across the networks... but if you sign up for 'reports' every time they get it, you'll be notified by text... then let the buggers lie and say they didn't;-)
someone who always gets reports and confronts the lot of them

Usually immediately, but if the network's overloaded (i.e. during a national footie game) sometimes it can be a little longer.

Depends on many factors - which system, size of the network, congestion on the network, weather, etc...
