Pressure sores are areas of injured skin and tissue. They are usually caused by sitting or lying in one position for too long. This puts pressure on certain areas of the body. The pressure can reduce the blood supply to the skin and the tissues under the skin. When a change in position doesn't occur often enough and the blood supply gets too low, a sore may form. Pressure sores are also called bed sores, pressure ulcers and decubitus ulcers.

A pressure sore is typically from continuous pressure on a particular part of your body that you are not moving say for instance a quadriplegic may have pressure sores on their backs and legs from not being able to move them in the bed. Although anyone can get them if they are not very active.

I used to work in a nursing home and the bed ridden residents got them all of the time. On the elderly they occured because they had to lay around and could not turn themselves. The skin would "breakdown" . As CNA's we were required to turn them to different positions every 2 hours to prevent this, but it still would occur sometimes. If left untreated they could develop into fairly big holes. Not a pretty sight.
