As a straight, moderate Republican I believe in aligning myself with freedom and rights for all.
I really do not care if the individual is gay or straight, black or white, a citizen of US or from another country, all should be treated fairly
To do anything less is to behave in a less than human manner. (And no, that was not a typo. I did not mean humane, I meant human. I believe that all bigots are less than human.)

I am actually a lesbian liberal democrat and I think you have a valid point.
Most very wise democrats, like Clinton, realize that gay ppl do not vote based on their sexual orientation.... meaning we will stand by a politician even if they are opposed to us at a certain level.
That is why we didn't hold it against Clinton for agreeing to the ban on gay marriage or agreeing to 'don't ask don't tell' in the military.
Now with that said, things have changed a bit lately. Now that the republicans want to alter the constitution, we have declared war on them. So that complicates this a bit.
So I am saying that it is difficult for a democrat not to take some sort of stance on that issue (the consitutional amendment). I'm not willing to sacrifice that for any politician.
So anyways, yes it is a dilemma. Rove has made it one of the main issues to motivate that base while it has also become a main issue now for us gay ppl.
Although, us gay ppl are still willing to leave it alone as long as they leave the constitution alone. I think that is why Rove has them debating it in Congress as we speak. He is a smart fellow.
As far as an actual answer to your question, if I were a democratic candidate, I would either avoid the issue or just say there is no need for a constitutional amendment. That way they are safe and still get our vote.

Democrats and Republicans should not get involved in the minutia of every ones likes and dislikes. The idea of government is to allow freedom of thought and expression and provide for the common defense. Every person in our society should be involved in the fight against terrorism. Only all of the people working together can defeat terrorism. No army is that strong.

I think that being an accepting individual is never a bad thing. Whether you're marching with gay activists, or for female rights, etc. I know it seems naive, but I can't figure why it isn't as simle as "love and be loved". I guess I don't have the brain capacity to comprehend hate. So, no. I don't think it hurts:)

You cannot abandon what you believe in just to win the current election. Both Republicans and Democrats support issues that are not in the majority, but it is what they believe.

I have no problem with Gay Activists. Why would it hurt to march alongside them?? They're human beings like I assume you are. If you meant no offense why did you post that it might "hurt" us to stand up for them??

I don't really care if people are gay or not. I wouldn't go to a Gay Pride demonstation, but if they want to support PEACE, it's fine with me. It's not like we're going to the same cocktail party together, though that wouldn't bother me either. My husband's quite homophobic, but I don't care what your sexual preferance is unless you are a pedophile.

If gays are going to get snubbed by the GOP, they might as well come over to the Dems
