If it wasn't race it'd be religion or philosophy. Look at the Sunis and Shites? Look at the Israelis and Palestinians. Look at Africa. Heck, I don't like anyone at all.

Racism is just a fancy word for hate. If everyone was the same race, we would still hate each other. There are people within the same race that discriminate against each other too..

because there are stupid and ignorant people in this world who think its perfectly okay for them to pick on a particular ethnic group, of whom they pathetically either see as a 'threat' to them or because they just don't like 'difference'. racism exists not just throughout history and lack of education and respect shown to others but also because of right-wing media trash, such as newspapers taking a stab at immigrants and muslims to name and in racist people's non-acceptance of socio-ethnic values. i couldn't give a toss about them seeing as they are worthless and, plus i think they are hideous; i won't waste my valuble time over them because these people are truly not worth it.
and yes, you made a valid point as not only would we all look the same but we'd be probably miserable and bored with ourselves as well. diversity is a wonderful thing, and those who can't, don't and won't accept it don't deserve to be on this planet and should be sent elsewhere. although i could think of other ways of punishing them as well

you might as well ask "why is there hatred?"
humans are weak creatures, and hatred is an easily understood/expressed base emotion. racism is just a way of justifying hatred.
