Nothing is on...no light, no fan, nothing. The monitor is on. I tried changing the cords to see if I had a faulty cord. That didn't work. I reset the switch. that didn't work. I waited until this morning to turn it on. That didn't work.

Hmmm, there could be several issues but if you take it to the tech, then they might tell you EXACTLY what it is. If you tried to guess it yourself, it might get more expensive.
The reason is, I will give you reasons why your computer might not turn on and you will have to get the parts until you are able to fix the problem.
1) Try getting a new power supply. If anything, you might want to take the power adapter from your computer at work and just try it at home to see if thats the problem. Its the black one that is connected from your tower to the outlet.
2) It might be the CMOS battery. There is a tiny little eenie weenie battery inside your computer. It looks like a small coin. It is your internal backup battery that gets used when your computer is on or off, mostly by your BIOS. You might have to get a new one if it is damaged. Normally, a cmos battery dies after 3-5 years from when you first bought your computer.
3) The power supply in your tower might be damaged or dead. There is a power supply that your hard drive and all your computer parts gets their power from. When you plug in the power adapter, it powers up this big power supply in your computer and all your other computer parts connect to it as its energy source. It might be damaged or it might have died.
Those are just some of the problems that you might be having. This is assuming your computer is TOTALLY not turning on whatsoever. If your computer turned on, but then nothing happens, then thats a whole other problem. But the 3 that I mentioend might be related to your computer not turning on at all what-so-ever.

Hope this is the question you want me to answer. I am answering on your invitation. The problem is one of the following:
1. Your computer switch may be faulty - Happens in models from Compaq (currently HP prezario). If that is the case you may have to buy and replace the switch.
2. Your power supply has failed. Replacing power suppy is a pain especially in some HP models - everything so crammed in. Look at the following document to see if it makes sense for you: You can buy a battery from computer shops like Comp USA, Frys, etc.
http://www.fonerbooks.com/r_power.htm
3. When you are doing this check and make sure that the fans are working. Otherwise you may have to replace them too. Your issue of computer switching off automatically tells me that the power supply fan was bad for some time and probably your power supply failed due to over-heating.

My first question is what computer are you on now?
And you said Hewlett Packard? God bless you. I had an HP that did the same thing. I'm not messing with you, it just up and died. I took it to be fixed hoping maybe they could find a loose wire or maybe just reload the OS system, and the shop pronounced it DOA. And it was just over eighteen months old at the time, so no longer covered by any warranty.
My advice is to take it someplace who will give it a once over and then appraise the cost of fixing it before doing any work. This may be the cheapest way of getting it fixed. You know, these friggin' things can almost drive you as crazy as kids.

There are a couple of things that you can try to solve this problem.
1. Your Main Power Supply got damaged due to a power surge (You can verify this by checking the fan behind your system unit if it is running or not.)
2. Turn your complete system off. Turn off the monitor. Then turn the system off but do NOT turn the monitor On yet. After a few seconds of turning on the computer, turn on your monitor.

Check the power supply first then call tech support for your computer. This happened to my dad a week ago and it was the hard drive that went bad.

Maybe you accidentally kicked the cord out of the socket? Check your circuit breaker for the house, too. It sounds like a problem with incoming power.
