If you recover, you will not loose your files, if you re-install, that is another story, repair wil most likely over write some critical windows settings, and may render your application useles (re-install those as well), but your data files are left intact

It is not at all a problem , u can have ur windows back again to work. Microsoft developers are great at recovering the last good cofig . They create a SnapShot for every start up
U need not worry , ur files won't get earsed .
" But keep in mind windows always shut down when u try to defragment any drives after the recovery " ( This is my personal Experience)
To over come this first get recover to last good configured boot , login to the system , keep backup for files and reload the XP once again .
For more information to know the procedure for a logging thru last god configuration

Is your laptop conneted to AC power when this happens? Once you disconnect the laptop, Toshiba power settings will change energy settings to darken the screen so you can get more life out of your battery. Sometimes it switches from dark to light and dark to light again if you closed the computer off of power, and then later opened it back up connected to AC. Once you plug in your AC the light should brighten again.

You can adjust the power settings by clicking the lightbulb icon on your taskbar.

Also, you should always have backups of your documents and programs, if you don't have them already, i suggest you start backing up right now. Just in case. That way, if you ever need to do a full format and restore, you can be sure that you won't lose anything. Because putting the Toshiba Restore DVD in there and selecting restore, WILL wipe out the hard drive and reformat and put it back to the same condition and settings it was when it left the factory.

You have a few options available to you:
1. Use the recovery disk and hope your computer is not totally FUBAR (this should not make you lose your info)
2. Re-install Windows (you WILL lose your info but solve the problem)
3. If the computer is still under warranty, send it in. They should be able to save your data and fix the computer.
4. If you are not under warranty, take it to a computer repair shop and get them to fix it (may cost you but they should be able to save your data)

Regardless after you fix your computer you should invest in a backup device (like an external HD or a flash disk) so that you are not stuck in this situation again.

Mine did the same thing a few months ago.The monitor would go onto standby!!
I think it was some thing to do with windows update, they were sending out an update that would determin whether your computer had a valid copy of XP or not . if you wait eventually it comes back on sometimes it took 1/2 an hour!!
After I sorted out my invalid copy of XP, it became ok again.
Funny that!

If your computer won't start in normal mode, reboot your computer, press F8 during the boot process, use the arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER
