When I type in my username and password and press enter, it takes about a minute for my computer to unlock. Did a virus scan..no viruses.

Thanks for the answer, but my desktop loads right up when I log into it, but it's just when I 'unlock it' that takes too long

It's not unlocking. It's starting up all the programs and devices that are in your start up list or the run list in registry. All of the programs you install on your computer hog resources in one way or another. Many of them have little apps that run in the background so that when you click on the program it starts quicker or works faster.

But many of these program you only use every once in awhile like your digital camera, or quick time, or your scanner. Turning off the applets that are in your start up folder will speed up your boot/logon time.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig and hit enter. Click on the start up tab and you will see all of the things that have to run before you can get windows running. The only ones that have to run are your virus programs, spyware blockers, and firewalls.

Look at what's written under the command heading to see what program the applet belongs too. If you are not sure copy the file name down and look it up on yahoo. My computer only has 7 items running at startup. Before I did this there were 24. The items will remain under the start up list so if something stops working properly you can go back in and have the items start up as they did before.

Its because you have many programs at your computer and those programs are running from back ground and they are trying to load themselves.waht you have to do is go to start and click on run then type MSCONFIG then go to start up and uncheck unnecessary programs except your anti virus. Then click on ok and restart your computer.
