In the National League, 9! In the American League, College and High Scholl, 10. The reason for the difference is in the American league, College and high school they use a designated hitter, who hits for a player, usually a pitcher. In the National league, the pitcher has to hit for himself.

In the American League it goes:
Catcher
1st Base
2nd Base
Shortstop
3rd Base
Left Field
Center Field
Right Field
Pitcher
(when they are hitting, the AL uses a DH to hit for the pitcher)
In the NL, it's the same, except no DH is used...the pitcher hits for himself.

there are nine on the field. this is because of the designated hitter. so therefore nine of them bat. in the national league the pitcher bats, but in the american a designated hitter bats. i hope this helps with whatever you need it for.
