It would be better to walk before the meal rather than after it. 40 minutes of walking a day would count as adequate exercise. As to whether that would not burn off what you have eaten, that would depend both on the number of calories connsumed and on the amount of saturated fat you have consumed. If you are young you don't have to be too worried yet but surplus saturated fat settles in the coronary arteries and can clog it, paving the way to potential heart attacks. An Internet search will give you a quick idea of how many calories are burned in a minute of walking. Remember that every gram of fat yields nine calories, whereas one gram of protein and carbohydrate has four calories of energy.

Walking is a very low impact activity. To burn any significant amount of calories you would have to do it for longer than 40 minutes. I would shoot for 90 if you're trying to lose weight.
If you're just trying to get your heart going and maintain, 40 minutes is enough.

If you are overweight it would be better to walk BEFORE you eat (a small meal, not a big one), because then your body will be burning your fat. If you walk after eating, your body will use the food you just ate for energy, not the stored fat.
