There are 64 squares on a chessboard (8 by 8)
Each side as 2 rows each (8*2 =16) -which means each side has 16 pieces (8 pawns, 2 rooks(castles), 2 knights, 2 bishops and a king and queen)
So altogether there are 32 pieces on the board if you count both sides.

I presume that you mean at the start of the game? in which case it is 32. If not at the start then anything from 32 to 2
