West Side Story. A perfect narrative (thanks to Shakespeare), each song is a classic.
The musical through-line is exquisite; the way the themes are used throughout: the major/minor reprise of "Somewhere" while they carry Tony's body away; the use of the tritone (augmented fourth) that indicates tension, even in the loveliest songs--Maria, the Jets theme, Cool.
Great dancing!

I cannot say what the best musical ever written was but my personal favourite was the King and I which I saw when I was in my mid teens. Yul Brynner was performing (while battling cancer) and it was so amazing. I remember it like it was yesterday. Now I am a big Opera fan so I have not been to a musical for quite awhile.

The best I've ever played in (or sung in) was "Jesus Christ Superstar", technically not a musical, but rather a rock opera. The time and key signature changes came fast and furious, the music and rhythms were difficult, but it was the best time I ever had playing bari sax!
Concerning a "standard" musical, I completely enjoyed "Fiddler on the Roof". Good story, wonderful music, and the casting was superb when I saw it.

I love "Rent". If you listen to the story it's about people coming togeather iun a time of need and going through some major problems. And even though their world is crumbling, they stand strong for what they beleive in!!!
Man, Awsome awsome musical!

I'm not a big musical fan as I've only seen a handful, but I loved 1776 because I'm into history and it was educational. It will satisfy the musical fans, and history fans (me)

I love "Singing In the Rain." Gene Kelly was just spectacular in that one. From the songs, to the dance routines, the cast, and the actual script. It was just a great one all the way around.
