In the early 2000s many political writers have coined a new term, "Conservative Counterculture," which describes a growing youth movement in both the Catholic and Evangelical churches in the United States. This is a group of American teens and young people who no longer see themselves as part of the "MTV" establishment and who reject pre-marital sex, drugs, and alcohol. Polls in recent years have shown that more American teens are opposed to discrimination against religious people, abortion, affirmative action, and the silencing of freedom of speech for the sake of political correctness. The existence of a conservative youth counterculture is supported by the fact that a growing percentage of young people voted Republican in the 2000 and 2004 American elections, though a majority of young voters are still Democrats.[citation needed]

Despite the emergence of a conservative counterculture in the early 2000s, a more liberal one seems to be coming into play as well. With an increasing number of young people questioning the government's positions on the Iraq War, gay marriage and other important issues, a neo-hippie counterculture is emerging.[citation needed]

OK -- got a long answer here, so hold onto your pipe and settle in. First -- the perception that San Diego is conservative -- it's outdated. 40 years ago, before East Coast transplants moved to SD, yeah, it was conservative. No longer -- their new mayor is a liberal, SD's first Democratic mayor in decades. The city is slowly changing. San Diego has counter-culture elements in the beach towns (Ocean Beach, Imperial Beach, south Pacific Beach) ; hipsters in South Park, North Park ; goths in Hillcrest, Normal Heights ; etc. A LOT of musicians are from San Diego: Eddie Vedder is an example. NEVERTHELESS -- San Diego isn't my choice. Another misperception is San Francisco as "the" epicenter for hipness. No question, SF attracts a lot of bohemians, misfits, and free spirits. But its reputation (like San Diego), is dated. Haight Ashbury is a mecca, but they held a formal burial for the hippies back in 1967, The outpouring of music from that era, and the bands they spawned, has seen better days. I don't visit Seattle anymore. No question the Emerald City is progressive, with organized rallies and open-mindedness towards ethnic populations. And yes, the grunge movement and the lesser known Rock and Roll museum lends a certain nostalgia. Seattle, however, is a bit more caffeinated than mellow. The rain puts its citizenry on edge. What about Portland? Portlanders are health-minded, and eco-oriented. Its biking and walking paths are national models. Tune into "Portlandia" (the TV program), for a hint of this city. But is Portland for hippies, or hipsters? Ah, but you asked a question. Well, all cities have their elements of the counterculture. But, which has "more"? Portland San Francisco Seattle San Diego

The best example would be the hippie movement during the 60's. Then there was punk in the 80's and not Goth, I suppose.
