The Comedia dell'Arte started in Italy in the 14th century. It consisted of a group of traveling actors and actresses that performed set pieces called scenarios.
They were known for their acrobatic skills and very raunchy humor.
Each person specialized in a certain character; the foolish old man called Pantalone. the lover, the girl or the comic character, sometimes called Punicella.
In England these characters became beloved as Punch and Judy.
Much of our slapstick humor owes it's origin to the Comedia troupes.

Comedia Del Arte is a thatrical style practiced in Italy of the middle ages. It was both highly structured and free form at the same time. Charecters were set. Scaramouch was a scoundrel, Colombine was a paradigm if co-dependence...etc etc.. the charecters always dressed the same and acted the same so that the audience would always regognise them. What changed from play to play was the story or plot...it was sort of free form.
