Yes you can install 2 Operating systems on One machine. When you install 2000 make sure that you create a partition on the drive when it asks you and then install Win 2000 on the partion. Then on startup it will ask you if you want to run Win98 or Win2000. one of them will be a default so if you don't select anything it will just pick one if you have not giving your response in a set amount of time.

Drewpie - LILO is the bootloader for LINUX not Windows.

Yes. It's called duel-booting.
When you put in your 2000 CD, it will ask you to upgrade or start a new install. Choose new install and choose a different destination for the install (rather than the WINDOWS directory on C: drive).

Yes you can. But I don't remember (it seems to me that it is so) if Win2000 automatically install a bootloader, which is a program that runs when you start the computer and gives you the opportunity to choice between to or more operating systems. If so, you however have to make a partition if you weant that everything works properly, and you can't do a partition without the risk of lose everything you have on your hard disk. So my advice is:
- save all your important files
- partition your hard disk
- reinstall win98
- install win2000

You have several good answers about bootloaders. First just let me clarify one thing. LILO can boot Windows as well as Linux.

The think I would be concerned about is whether an 8GB hard drive is big enough to hold two systems.

Yes you just need a "boot loader" or boot from a floppy to the partition containing the OS you want. LiLO or some clone of.
