The scale you get on a humidifier is combination of magnesium and calcium oxides or hydroxides that have precipitated out of the tap water. This deposit is similar to what accumulated in coffee makers and reduces their efficiency.

Just as you can use vinegar to clean a coffee pot, you can also use it to clean your humidifier.

Vinegar is an acid and that's why it dissolves water sediments. However, it is a weak acid. If you have a pool or know someone that has a swimming pool, they will have muriatic acid that will clean the scale more effectively. However....BE Careful.

Muriatic acid is very strong and requires care in handling so as not to get it on your skin or in your eyes if you don't what you're doing, I would stick to the vinegar method. It may smell bad while you're doing it, but it's much safer.

Vinegar and warm water is the best solvent for scale build up. Pour vinegar in the reservoir and let it sit over night. The next day rinse it out with warm water. If you go to a Heating or Plumbing supply house they sell Accu tabs or humidifier tablets which are small tablets you can put in the humidifier to prevent scale build up.

The best thing for this is muriatic acid, or CLR...but if you want to stay non-chemical, your next best bet would be vinegar. It works fairly well on lime and scale, especially if you get it hot first.

Hope this info helped.

using vinegar is ok but I use lemon juice!! especially in coffee pots and stuff,,, buy the bottled extract or juice and add it to the water,, as you use the appliance it will get rid of the build up,, in coffee pots,, put some in fresh water and run the pot without the coffee then run clean water through a couple of times to remove the taste
