Is that actually true? I guess they figure one game won't make much of a difference. He could have totally sucked and still got the award. It doesn't look good when the guy that wins the award gets thrown off like that though, whatever Materazzi said.

Here are two facts:
1) the 'Golden Ball' award given to the most valuable player is voted and awarded by members of the press, not by FIFA officials.
2) The award is announced at the end of the final match, after the 2006 World Cup it was announced 24 hours later, meaning that the voting remained open after the final match.

Funny, then Ronaldo shouldn't win the honor in 98 because he sucked (badly even though he had 3 opportinuties to scored and got blocked all three of those times). Same thing for Oliver Kahn where he sucked in the final of 2002, and why was he having the honor? Let's strip them all off!! Especially that one Italian guy that really didn't deserve it named Schillachi in 1990 WC. He was a good player and a great scorer, but come on, golden ball? Even his golden shoe award was a sympathetic contribution by the true hero named Roberto Baggio. And since when he had more contribution to the team compare to Hassler, Mattaus, or Maradona? Strip the awards (both) off from him (the cheater), too. So..., there left Romario in 1994, and he truly deserved it I guess.

Player of the tournament is based on FOOTBALL, not how ethical you are or how angelic and perfect you are.
Zidane won it fair and square. Quit complaining or at least take it up with FIFA.
And if FIFA didn't like their decision, they could have taken the ball away from him. But they didn't since they realized that he deserved it.
Ronaldinho said Zidane deserved it and most people except for Italians (or other people that lost to France) are the ones claiming Zidane didn't deserve it. Hell, even your buddy Materazzi said Zidane deserved it.

i agree with you. FIFA deserves a red card for its injustices at the 2006 World Cup.
example:
a HEAD-BUTT crime was worthy of the award
for the incident (Rooney-Cristiano) CR was stripped of the Gillette award. MAKES NO SENSE TO ME, unless they got paid by the french
