i am trying to access a computer on my lan as a server i have no idea how regular servers are accessed so any help would be appreciated.

If you mean you want to run a web server on your machine, then check out apache, it is a good one. You install it on the "server" computer. If you wanted access from the internet, outside your lan, then that is more work.

Assuming both computers are on the same network...
Go to the "server" computer and set up file serving for whatever drive or folders you want to access from your computer
Go to yout computer and click on the My Network Places
View the entire network
You should be able to see the other computer
Double click on it

hmm first a server can serve lots of things so specify what you want. it look like you want to use a computer on your network as a webserver serving webpages.....

wel you need webserver software look for a lot of software on tucows.com

then you need to now the ip address of that computer
run the software put the webdocuments in de place the program wants it and point the pc that you want to browse this webpage with to that ip number from internetexplorer or any other webbrowser.
