I'm happy with All-Star Superman, so an Ultimate is unnecessary.

What exactly would be different? The Ultimates universe is basically more gritty, realistic version of things so how would you change him? If you make him less idealistic or less committed to protecting innocents, he's not Superman any more.

I mean, there was "Red Son" where his spaceship crashed in Russia instead of America and he grew up as a Soviet superhero, but he was the same person despite his upbringing by the communist regime, which is what made that story work.

I just don't see how to change him enough to fit an Ultimates style universe, without losing the essential character of Supes.

Have to agree with Matthew Raven.

All Star Superman, launched in November 2005, is an ongoing comic book series featuring Superman, written by Grant Morrison, drawn by Frank Quitely, and published by DC Comics. DC claims that this series will "strip down the Man of Steel to his timeless, essential elements."

This is the second series to be launched in 2005 under DC's All Star imprint, the first being All Star Batman and Robin. These series are attempts by DC to allow major comics creators a chance to tell stories showcasing these characters, without being restricted by DC Universe continuity.

All Star Superman won the Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2006.

You really need to get yourself to a comic book store, the All Star books are the DC version of the Ultimate books put out by Marvel.

With Marvel, the "Ultimates" versions of their characters have been hit and miss, but for the most part, have generated a lot of interest. I think if DC were to try a version of "Ultimates" with their characters, it would not be greatly received, given the fact DC fans prefer their characters "old school". HOWEVER, I would like to see an updated, streamlined, modernized version of their characters, starting with Superman, making him a bit more realistic in a sense by tweaking a few things with his origin-yes, I know Byrne has already done this, but it just fell short. Change Supes' costume a bit, get rid of the Clark Kent identity, ditch Lois Lane, alter some of his powers, but keep him the same personality wise, etc. I think DC would do well to try some things, and I hope they do-not necessarily an "Ultimates" version, but at least some changes would be appreciated.

Well they cannot use the words "Ultimate" because of Marvel's line. But...
There already is an "Ultimate" style Superman. It is called "All Star Superman" and is written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Frank Quietly. It takes all the classic elements of the various ages of Superman and quantifies it into a metafictional narrative.

They even made Doomsday and Jimmy Olsen cool!
