I sometimes hear these in casual conversation--are they alluding to a book, cartoon, movie, story, fable, or something else?

Kung Fu was a TV series in the 70"s. David Carradine played Cane a half white/Chinese boy raised by Shaolin monks. Cane's mentor was a blind priest/monk who called Cane "grasshopper" because the first time Cane met his mentor there was a grasshopper on Canes shoulder. Since then the term has become a cultural iconic phrase that implies "young student" or a beginner at the skill you are learning.
Cane learns his American father may be alive and living in America. The blind mentor is killed by the body guards of an Asian prince and Cane subsequently kills the prince. Cane escapes to America pursued by Ninja assassins bent on gaining revenge for the death of the prince. Through out the TV series Cane has flashbacks to his time as a student and the master giving him advice about how to handle his problems and then being called grasshopper. Hope this explains it better.
