If you have a cd burner on your pc, you can download AVG for free and burn it to a CD then install it on her pc from that CD. Here is a link to the free version:

Download and run AVG virus scanner from http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/setup/avg71free_405a782.exe for free. As it will be the install file, copy it to CD for her to install.
Also:Check for spyware. Run both Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to remove any spyware. Run both as one may caught something the other missing. Then go to microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against future infections. Again, all install files and all free.
On her PC:
Run the msconfig utility. Go to Start, then Run and type in: msconfig
Go to the startup tab
You will see a list of all the programs that are loaded when your computer starts up. Uncheck any that you do not have to have. (Usually you can uncheck them all). If you decide you to need one, you can go back and recheck it.
Between those she should be good.

Like another person said, AVG antivirus is probably the best free and legal one (as opposed to illegally cracking one that cost money to get it for free).

you can try avg, but i really think you should spend the money for it. virus protection is not something you want to skimp on. you should visit symantec's site, they make norton internet security. it's worth the $45 for a one year subscription. you can even purchase a 3 user license. do you have anybody in your family that is in the military by chance?

AVG is good, but support is ... well, forget it.
AVAST is also good, and better support.
