I know both are mass produced (taylor, gibson, and not to exclude martin) but I know and seen taylors production techniques and can tell they are a higher quality production than the rest, but it also shows through the cost...

the real question is, how do gibson acoustics stand up over time, and also i searched over 5-6 stores for the perfect ($2000-3000) guitar, but i still havent found "the one". I'm left with the two main choices, a Gibson Songwriter and a Taylor 615 or 810

should i wait and save for the taylor or head over to the quick buy gibson?

(the tone ive been looking for is deep and bassy ... not much a bright toned person, if that helps)

Concentrate on the woods, not so much the brands. If you like deep and bassy, try our a few mahogony-backed guitars. The 810's a pretty good choice, don't rule out the 500 series as well, they're mahagony. You may want to go with a Jumbo (big body) as well (Taylor would number it an 815).

I know it's a scary thing, but have you thought about Ebay? It seems like a big jump to be making on Ebay, but I've not gone wrong yet. Do your research in the music stores, but buy on Ebay (sorry all you store owners, heck, hit Guitar Center and don't forget the "may I help you" riff!).

What's the Songwriter made of in the back (just checked, rosewood like the 800 taylors, good choice, balanced tone)? Avoid the 615 if you want Bass, maple's more a subtle tone. If you want a cheap little thundercannon, try a Martin D-15. Under 600 bucks, solid mahagony back...it'll vibrate your ribcage to pieces when you hit the low E! When in doubt ANY Martin D-18 from the late 60's early 70's should do, you may have to replace the pickguard, but they're mahogony tone-monsters!

Good luck and enjoy, the search is almost as fun as the purchase...

I don't think I've ever played a Gibson acoustic, but I have played Taylors, and they are probably my favorite acoustic guitars. The sound quality and playability is fantastic. You could try checking out www.carvin.com. I don't know if they have the tone you're looking for, but I've heard that they hold up extremely well and can take a lot of abuse without breaking. They're also a lot less expensive than Taylor.

I have toured the Taylor Facility in Southern California ( near San Diego ) . They are making some fine instruments there , and they are well worth the money !

Best of luck !
