First off he was not just a person written about in a book. The Catholic Church in those days always took in a few people that were deformed for whatever their reasons were at that time period. So even to day someone like that can exist in a Europeans Catholic Church.. So to answer your question is yes............

No, that was just a book written by Victor Hugo. I don't think he was writing about real events, or even just based on real events.

he would be really old....and i don't think he had any supernatural powers i think he was just deformed but still had an eye for the ladies....tough luck for that poor bastard....i'm not entirely sure though because i never did read the book....i tried ....but it was way tooo french.
